How do I prepare my child for the dentist?

Going to the dentist with children can often be a daunting task. For children, it is often not a fun outing and they often dread going there. As a parent, you want to prepare your child well and make sure they are not afraid of the dentist. You can do this by reassuring them and explaining what the dentist does exactly. At La Marque Dentist, we think it's important to take the time for your child and to make sure the checkups and treatments for children go smoothly in a playful manner.

Our tips for good preparation

When your child visits the dentist for the first time, it can sometimes be a little exciting. Therefore, it is important to prepare your child well and not to give him or her any negative thoughts. We would like to give you a few tips so that you and your child can visit our practice with peace of mind.

Tip 1: Get your child used to the environment at an early age

By bringing your child to the practice when you have an appointment, he or she can get used to the environment, the smell, and the sounds. When you bring your child from 2 or 3 years old, they will experience it as a normal event. From the age of 3, it is possible for your child to sit in the treatment chair, and we can introduce them to the staff and the materials in a playful manner.

Tip 2: Reassure your child

By explaining in your own words in a clear way who the man or woman in the white coat is and what the big lamp and the crazy chair are for, your child will understand what a dentist does. Reassure them by saying, for example, that they are only going to take a look in your mouth and give tips on how to brush your teeth. Don't give too many details but make them feel safe.

Tip 3: Tell your child about the appointment on time

Of course, it's up to you to decide when is the best time to tell your child about the dental appointment. Some children need more time to prepare than others. It can be helpful to schedule a quiet moment to talk about this with your child.

Tip 4: Do not promise gifts

When you promise your child a gift after the dental visit, the child may get the idea that something bad is going to happen. If you want to reward your child, it is best to do this afterwards. Be sure to show your child that you are proud of them and that they did a good job. After the treatment, you can choose to give your child a reward.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind that every child is different and that you can best feel how to handle a visit to the dentist. If you would like some advice, feel free to ask when you make an appointment at our dental clinic in La Marque, Texas. For example, mention that your child is nervous about going to the dentist. We will be happy to help you in this case. All our dentists and dental assistants are specialised in putting your children at ease.
